The Safety Of A Labiaplasty Surgery

Labiaplasty is a cosmetic surgery that continues to grow in popularity because of a lot of reasons. Some patients may opt for this operation because they want some relief from the genital pain while others want to undergo this procedure with hopes that it would enhance their sexual satisfaction. There are also a few patients who are transgender women and they go through this operation after obtaining a gender reassignment surgery.

Labiaplasty surgery involves trimming and shaping the vagina’s labia minora, labia majora, or both. The inner flaps of skin that covers the vagina are called the labia minora. The labia majora are the external sections of the labia or the outer lips. The labia may change its shape and appearance as a result of sexual intercourse, the aging process, genetics, or childbirth.

The Risks

Like all the other kinds of cosmetic operation, a labiaplasty surgery also has its own set of risks. These include the following:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Pigmentation changes
  • Temporary numbness
  • Asymmetry between the labia minora and labia majora
  • Reduced sexual sensation
  • Excessive scar tissue buildup that may appear as lumps
  • Hematoma
  • Puckering of the skin
  • Sexual dysfunction

The Preparations

Your cosmetic surgeon will ask you to stop smoking and drinking alcohol at least seven days before the labiaplasty surgery. If you have any doubts, do not hesitate to talk to your cosmetic surgeon about the effective ways to quit the habit for good. You will also be asked to avoid certain medications, blood thinners, and non-steroidal inflammatory drugs because they can increase your risk of bleeding. You will also be asked to stop taking herbal remedies, omega-3 fatty acids, green tea, ginkgo biloba, vitamin E, and more. You are also not allowed to have sexual intercourse before your labiaplasty surgery.

The Procedure

The labiaplasty surgery takes about two hours, performed under a local anaesthetic, and on an outpatient basis. The inner vaginal lips that may be elongated or uneven are trimmed and shortened using a laser, scalpel, or specialized scissors during the operation. The location where the incision will be made depends on various factors like the size, texture, and configuration of the labia. The labia majora may also be reduced through liposuction or surgery if necessary. Other procedures may also be performed in combination with this operation like the hoodectomy, which involves exposing the clitoris to increase the patient’s sexual stimulation.

The Recovery Period

After undergoing the labiaplasty surgery, you need to avoid sexual intercourse for at least one month. You should expect some level of tenderness and inflammation in your genitals for several weeks. You will also notice bruising in your labia and surrounding area. Your cosmetic surgeon will prescribe oral medications to help you manage the pain. You will also be required to take antibiotics to help lessen the risk of infection following the operation.

Furthermore, you are not allowed to take on heavy, strenuous exercises for at least three weeks following the procedure. You cannot use tampons within the 10 days after your surgery. As an alternative, you need to wear a pad for at least seven days due to postsurgical bleeding.

Before you go through all these, be sure to find a qualified, experienced, skilled, and reputable cosmetic surgeon. It is also not ideal to go cheap. You would not want to sacrifice your health just because you wish to cut back on costs.
